Build the day around the walk
This suggested route starts outside Venezia Santa Lucia railway station and continues through Cannaregio towards Rialto, then San Marco. It involves bridges, steps and busy passages. It is not a step-free itinerary, and we do not assign a fixed completion time: crowds, stops and route choices make a substantial difference.
Santa Lucia to Cannaregio
Outside the station, pause to orient yourself beside the Grand Canal. For this route, remain on the station side and head towards the Lista di Spagna and Campo San Geremia, then continue towards the Strada Nova. Cannaregio’s side streets offer a change of pace, but a canal-side turning may end without a crossing.
Follow the city towards Rialto
Use the street signs for Rialto as a broad direction, checking a map at junctions rather than following the crowd alone. Near the bridge, the scale shifts from residential passages to a major commercial crossing. Step out of the walking flow before stopping for photographs.
Continue to San Marco
From the San Marco side of Rialto, continue towards Piazza San Marco through the network of shopping streets and small squares. On arrival, first take in the square and its relationship to the waterfront. Treat entry to the basilica or palace as a separate visit with its own arrangements.
Choose a sensible finish
Do not assume you need to retrace the entire route. Check an appropriate waterbus connection, or continue walking only if your energy and daylight allow. For a shorter day, end at Rialto and save San Marco for another outing. Carry a map that works offline; a phone signal and a blue location dot do not always resolve which side of a canal you need.
